Overpane for macOS

One universal build, no installer, no dependencies beyond the system frameworks and — on the bring-your-own tiers — an AI CLI on your PATH.

Get the macOS build

The signed build is not published yet. Leave your address and it arrives in one message.

Free forever on your own agent — no account, no card. Before you rely on it, press ⌃⌥⌘V to run VERIFY on your own machine, orsee how the check works.

macOS 13 Ventura or later is required. Earlier releases are not supported and will not be. The app uses ScreenCaptureKit and the Vision framework, neither of which behaves the same below macOS 13 Ventura.

Windows

Planned

There is no Windows build. It is planned, it is not written, and we are not going to imply otherwise by putting a greyed-out button here. Leave your address and you will hear from us once — when there is something to install.

One message, when the Windows build exists. Nothing else.

Before you start

Two macOS permissions are needed.

Overpane asks for both the first time it runs. Here is what each one is for, so you can decide before the dialog appears rather than after.

  1. 01

    Screen Recording

To read the screen at all. Without it there is nothing for OCR to read and no action can do anything.

System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording

macOS only applies a new Screen Recording grant to a fresh launch, so quit and reopen the app once after granting it.

  2. 02

    Accessibility

To handle the chord’s modifier keys itself, rather than letting them reach whatever application is in front of you.

System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility

Optional, but recommended. Without it the app falls back to Carbon hotkeys — every chord still works, and the panel’s status screen tells you which path is live.

macOS ties both grants to the application’s code signature, so a new build can look like a new application and ask again. That is macOS behaviour, not a bug in the app.The full walkthrough is in the docs.

An agent, or a subscription

On the free and Connect tiers, Overpane drives an AI CLI already on your PATH —claude, codex, orgemini. It finds it once, at first use, through a login shell. If you would rather not run one, the Lite and Pro tiers include hosted inference instead.

Screen-share privacy

Overpane asks macOS to keep its panel out of screen captures, so your notes and prompts stay out of a shared stream or a screenshot. Press ⌃⌥⌘V to measure the result on your own machine — it reports PASS, FAIL, or COULD NOT MEASURE.

This is a confidentiality feature and its scope is exactly that: what a shared stream or a screenshot contains. It says nothing about what other software on your machine can observe, and it is no substitute for telling people you are using an assistant where you are expected to. Our acceptable use policy sets out where it must not be relied on.
